POC bike helmets: Great protection, great design. What’s not to love?
Most POC bike helmets use a protective liner made of expanded polypropylene (EPP), rather than the traditional expanded polystyrene (EPS) hard foam. Unlike EPS, EPP does not deform permanently on impact, making it suitable for absorbing repetitive small shocks. For a mountain biker or BMX rider, this is good news.
POC bike helmets draw upon the same technology used in POC ski helmets but with adaptations to the unique needs of cyclists. For instance, a POC bike helmet is going to need more ventilation than a ski helmet. However, open vents in a bike helmet can leave the rider’s head unprotected from sharp objects that could penetrate the helmet. If you’re a mountain bike or a downhill racer, you don’t need a branch or sharp rocks sneaking into your helmet vents. To solve this, POC developed a patented concept of double overlapping shells or VDSAP (Ventilated Double-Shell Anti-Penetration).
